Distinguished and Famous people from Terang
✈️ John Robertson Duigan
John Robertson Duigan was born in Terang before becoming a pioneer of Australian aircraft design. After engineering study in Britain, he worked with his brother Reginald at the family's property near Mia Mia. A postcard showing the Wright brothers' achievements helped spark experiments that progressed from a disappointing kite to a powered biplane. Short hops in July 1910 were followed by the October flight Duigan regarded as properly controlled. He had built and flown the first Australian-designed and constructed aeroplane to achieve controlled powered flight. Terang was his birthplace; the inventive workshop and flying paddocks were at Mia Mia, elsewhere in Victoria.
🔬 Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet
Macfarlane Burnet's Terang childhood included a serious interest in beetles. The bank manager's son explored the countryside, collected specimens and added observations and sketches to a treasured book on insects. That habit of close observation accompanied a scientific career that took him into virology and immunology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. He shared the 1960 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Peter Medawar for work on acquired immunological tolerance. The childhood collector was not simply accumulating interesting bugs: he was developing an enduring curiosity about how living things worked, with Terang providing an early field laboratory.
⛪ Pat Wood
Pat Wood attended Terang State and Higher Elementary schools while growing up on his father’s soldier-settlement farm near Noorat. Support from a local churchgoer helped him continue as a boarder at Geelong College. He became a Presbyterian minister and later a national church leader during the transition of most Presbyterian congregations into the Uniting Church. His life also included local-history writing and community work in retirement. Terang belongs to the early education behind that career. His energy was evident outside church administration too: during his courtship he twice cycled from Victoria to Sydney.
